According to Christian scholar and best-selling author Marcus Borg, the average height of a male in ancient Palestine was about 5 feet or 5 feet 1 inch, average weight maybe 110 pounds. Dr. Robert Bucklin, M.D., a forensic pathologist, estimates the man pictured on the Shroud was about 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighed about 178 pounds. Professor Lorenzo Ferri, who spent decades studying the Shroud, and created, with special permission of the Vatican, a full size statue of the Shroud, held that the man of the Shroud was 6'1" to 6'2". The man of the shroud also had recognizable semitic features, including a forked beard, sidelocks and a unplaited ponytail.

For more information concerning the physical characteristics of the man pictured on the Shroud of Turin, see "How tall is the man in the image on the Shroud of Turin?" on the Shroud of Turin Website.

DID BOY JESUS LOOK LIKE THIS?
FORENSIC EXPERTS USE COMPUTER IMAGES FROM SHROUD OF TURIN TO GUESS AGE 12

What did Jesus Christ of Nazareth look like as a boy?

While no one knows for certain, forensic experts are now using computer images from the Shroud of Turin along with historical data and other ancient images to make an educated guess.

In a documentary called "Jesus' Childhood" airing Sunday night on the Italian TV station Retequattro of the Mediaset Group, police artists use the same "aging" technology employed when searching for missing persons and criminals.

"In this case the experts went backwards. Now we have a hypothesis on how the man of the shroud might have looked at the age of 12," Mediaset said in a statement. "While some features, such as the color of the eyes and the hair's length, cut and color, are arbitrary, others come directly from the face impressed on the shroud's".

This computer-generated image was produced for the Discovery Channel's "Jesus: The Complete Story." It was created to suggest what Jesus' face might have looked like, contrary to the fair-skinned and fine-featured image familiar since medieval times. The new image was created by a forensic artist at the University of Manchester using the 2,000-year-old skull of a Jewish man from Israel. Cues on hair and skin tone were taken from frescoes of Jewish faces painted in the third century. The result is a dark-skinned, curly-haired man with a round, robust face and a stout nose.
